Working on rebuilding in postpartum is one of my favorite things to support clients with. Why? For several reasons - postpartum is a critically underserved time in a woman's life, postpartum being a transformative time, postpartum being a time where prior exercise habits tend to fall off, and rebuilding being an essential part of helping you "feel like you" again.
Finding a good postpartum rehab program is essential. This program needs to help take you from "just went through pregnancy, birth, and now what can I do?" through the early stages of reconnecting with your whole body, but especially pelvic floor + core, into building fitness and strength that will serve you throughout your life.
Postpartum rebuilding is really about those early stages - helping you find what is appropriate for your body and your goals, helping reduce any symptoms, navigate the first 6-12 months of postpartum, and progress you to a point where you are feeling like yourself again. Your body, especially your pelvic floor, needs load. You can't stay in rehab land forever - you need a program that is going to help you continue respond to load, adapt, and get stronger.
This early postpartum rebuild can feel intimidating + scary. This is why intentional strength training + conditioning matters. This is why it can be so helpful to have a coach who meets you where you are at, and can help build a program that is custom to your needs. What we know about postpartum and recovery is that it all needs to be custom to you. What works for a woman who ran + lifted weights throughout her first pregnancy and had a straight forward vaginal birth will not work for someone who walked throughout her third pregnancy and had an emergency cesarean birth.
