I have been hinting at this for a few weeks now...but the big announcement I have is that I am starting midwifery school in basically a week!
This step feels like it has been a long time coming. I started looking into midwifery school around when I was choosing a chiropractic school. A chiropractic school in Oregon has a bridge program that allows a DC to become a CPM (Certified Professional Midwife) with more training - and that definitely peaked my interest. I ultimately went to DC school in Minnesota but I did obtain my first doula certification while in school (I have 3 because I love learning - clearly).
At this point in my "birth worker career" I have attended 92 births mainly as a doula, but also as a midwife's assistant. A path to midwifery is one that has been calling to me and on my heart for awhile - and this year felt like the right time to step onto that path. I will be in school for about 2 years, with up to 5 years to complete all of my clinical + birth numbers needed for licensure. I am pursuing a CPM credential. I really debated on what path to take - CPM, CNM (certified nurse midwife), OBGYN or family medicine (a LOT more school when I already have a healthcare related doctorate). I ultimately decided CPM was what aligned with my values in how I wish to support women as an evidence informed, holistic provider (yes those words can go together).
It is really hard to step away from my work as a doula - I love supporting women alongside my hospital colleagues. It is definitely possible to have positive experiences in hospital settings. The good news is - I will still offer doula services on a VERY limited basis, with priority for repeat clients and those birthing in a hospital setting. I currently am booked through June, but have 1 opening per month for July, August, and September. If you are interested in hiring my preceptor as your midwife, that is another way I can support you as a student midwife.
What does this mean for other areas of my business? I will still offer in person chiropractic care with hybrid support. I will still offer 1:1 online coaching and my empowered pregnancy program. Meghan and I will still teach birth education! I have plans to offer a "pay what you can" Saturday strength class + support group for women (stay tuned)! It will mean that I will need clients + patients to be flexible as I may need to reschedule from time to time. Babies don't care about our schedules. More than anything - it will mean that I'm developing more knowledge to better serve my clients from preconception to postpartum, blended up with my chiropractic + pelvic health expertise.
On the personal side - I'm still on my preconception journey. My thyroid health is slowly improving. I'm trying hard to take time for rest and getting outside.
If you're looking to support me on my journey to become a midwife - referrals are how my business grows. Tell a woman you know could benefit from knowing about my business. If you want to send someone a gift card towards online services or birth education - let me know. Keeping my business alive + running will allow me to pay for costs associated with school (and just being alive).
I appreciate you all - thank you for reading this rare, non educational newsletter. More women's health info will be in your inbox next week!
With peace and love,
