YOU are honestly the most important factor at your birth - because you make the choices, the decisions, do the prep. But the person or people who choose to be your medical providers at your birth are the most important factor in my opinion. A provider who supports your birth in the manner you desire + deserve can make all of the difference in you having a positive experience, or a negative one.
An overview of medical providers you might choose to have at your birth:
- Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist: (MFM) This is an MD or a DO who is specialty trained in high risk birth scenarios.
- OB/GYN: This is an MD or a DO who is specialty trained as a surgeon in birth.
- Family Medicine Doctor: This is an MD or a DO who is trained in birth as part of their general/family medicine practice.
- Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM): This is someone with a nursing degree who has completed a masters degree in midwifery.
- Certified Professional Midwife (CPM/LM): This is a midwife who has either completed an in depth apprenticeship or has completed an associate’s degree in midwifery.
- Lay Midwife: These midwives are typically seen in Amish or Plain communities in the U.S.
The provider you choose for your birth MATTERS. Their opinions and choices can heavily influence your birth experience. Unfortunately in the U.S. hospital system - it is rare to have continuity of care or to even be able to pick the hospital you birth at with insurance. You may be able to select a midwife or OB group to be with. The provider at your birth will then be whoever is on call, plus the nurses that are working at that time. This is why it can be advantageous to have a doula who will support you and your partner throughout your experience - even before you arrive at the hospital.
People don’t realize that OBGYNs are SURGEONS. Incredible, life saving surgeons. They can certainly support low risk birth but might not be the best person to support low risk birth. Midwives and midwifery led models are perfect for low risk birth - inside and outside of hospitals. And most women qualify as low risk, even if they have more minor “complications” of pregnancy.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or want support in preparing for or recovering from birth. Women deserve more support.
With peace and love,
